Homeschool Resources

Homeschooling can be intimidating, due to the enormous amount of information and curriculum choices available. However, curriculum fairs permit parents to examine curriculum throughly, before buying. The curriculum list below  is simply a summary of our “favorite” curriculums, videos, games, catalogs, and websites that we have used throughout the years.

Free Resources

PBS Learning media offers free lessons and educational videos for science, social studies, health, physical education, math, English, engineering and technology. Parents can select grade level, subject, and standards. The video shown was found under Earth and Space Science. In conclusion, videos are great learning tools for auditory and visual learners.

Starfall Education’s website helps children in a dynamic and interactive manner. Zac the Rat makes learning fun for students as high as second grade.  When students click on a letter of the alphabet, the software provides activities intended to help them recall each letter associated with each sound.

It teaches students how to read, focusing on how the sounds of the letters fit into short sentences.  Animations are used throughout the program.

Apps, such as Duolingo, offer self-paced exercises to help students learn dozens of languages. Duolingo has courses in 34 languages.

We also used Rosetta Stone for Portuguese and Spanish. This software, however, is not free.

Project Gutenberg’s library contain over 60,000 free eBooks, including many classics. For that reason, it’s ideal for parents who want to save money  on reading material when homeschooling!

Resources

My book will give detailed information on writing curriculum options. For example, IEW focuses on equipping students with source material. The key word outline method, where students choose three to four key words from each sentence, is used throughout the curriculum. They write sentences based on chosen words. I purchased their theme-based writing lessons. The Medieval History based writing lessons are based on major historical figures, e.g., Byzantine Empire, The Battle of Hasting, and other topics.  By purchasing the book, students are entitled to download the “Student Resource Notebook.”  As a result, this guideline was a great tool and an excellent addition to assist my sons with writing. It teaches students how to include strong verbs, ly adverbs, quality adjectives, five senses & emotions, and transitional words to their composition.

What do the experts say?

“We all want every student to find success in school. In other words, while there are many factors that shape students’ achievement, the quality of the instructional materials they engage with plays a significant role in what and how much they learn .”
Polikoff & Koedel, 2017; Steiner, 2017
"The introduction of quality instructional materials can yield more than half a year of additional learning for students."
Kane et al., 2016
"Choose materials that align with state standards, support educators’ vision of what great teaching looks like."
